Pinto Beans

"My family loves this recipe after trying many different ones. When I'm short on time I use canned beans and just add the rest of the ingredients, I cook the bacon up when using canned beans. ENJOY!"

  1. Hi there! If I don't want to add meat to the recipe do I still need to cook it the extra 45 min? Thanks! Erin

Reviews

  1. I add half a tea spoon of baking soda and bring beans to a boil then turn them off for 1 hour and this is what my grandmother called cooking the farts out of ur beans. Try it really it works. After sitting for a hour cook per recipe.

  2. It's unanimous, 5 stars again. Loved this with cornbread and salad. I didn't change the seasonings at all and thought they were perfect. Made this with turkey ham and pureed 1 cup of the finished beans, adding them back to the pot for creaminess.

  3. No bacon, sauteed onion, garlic sweet pepper in coconut oil and butter. Added cumin, coriander powder, cayenne and a chopped green chilli. 2 1tspn salt.

  4. I made these for dinner tonight to serve as a side with our ribs. I didn't make any changes to the recipe and used a high quality bacon. The reviews from my family varied from not liking them at all to saying they were okay but didn't have enough flavor.

  5. I have some "European-style" bacon...smoked pork shoulder to use in this recipe!!! Maybe add some black beans for contrast... Certainly a different flavor profile for this European "chili". Yummy!! Be poetic with your spices for a real treat!!

Tweaks

  1. Replaced the bacon with sliced smoked beef and used fresh garlic instead of garlic powder.

Cooking is what I do. I love looking for new recipes. I have three daughters, the last one left for college this year. Being a military family gives us the opportunity to try a variety of cuisine's from all over the world. I learned to cook from watching my father while I was growing up and have loved cooking as long as I can remember. A big thank you to everyone for this wonderful site.
