"I got this recipe from my Breadman Pro bread maker. It was soooo delicious that I had to share it! For a variation, add the optional dehydrated onion for another excellent recipe :-D"

  • Bake in bread machine according to its instructions on the 2 lb. whole wheat setting.

Questions & Replies

  1. Is dry milk the same as powdered milk?

  2. Is the dry milk necessary? I hate to buy an entire box for only 3 tablespoons.

  3. What are the baking instructions if you are NOT using a bread machine, please?

  1. Is there an OMG rating? If so, this recipe gets it! I did have to make a couple subs, but neither were a big change. I used the last of my whole wheat flour the other day so I used 1 cup of AP flour, then the bread flour & rye flour called for. I only had 2 Tablespoons of caraway seeds left & I don't have dry milk but have had good luck using powdered buttermilk in place of it in other recipes so I used it here too. (I still used the whole wheat setting on my 2-lb loaf Toastmaster Bread & Butter Maker.) The loaf rose beautifully; has a light, crisp crust with a soft, tender interior. We haven't even started making dinner yet but we've eaten half the loaf! We love reuben sandwiches & I know this will be the perfect bread for them next time. Thanks for sharing, poo! Made & enjoyed for your Fall 2009 Football Pool, week 3 WIN! :D

  2. Excellent! I've thrown out many breads over the years but this is my go-to rye. I am going to reduce the honey slightly next time around. Thanks so much for sharing.

  3. Love scratch recipes and in my household, I do 99.9% of the cooking and 100% of the cleanup. To think, all these years I wanted a maid and I discovered, there she was all along staring at me in the mirror.

  4. I have finally found a rye bread that doesn't disgust my family! I admit I cheated and didn't use any caraway (DH hates it). This rose really high and is very soft and moist inside. A definite winner.
