Fried Green Tomatoes

- 2 medium green tomatoes
- 1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1⁄4 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ground red pepper
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cracked black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- hot pepper sauce (optional)
directions
- Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices.
- Combine flour, cornmeal, salt, garlic salt, red pepper and black pepper in pie plate or shallow bowl; mix well.
- Pour buttermilk into second pie plate or shallow bowl.
- Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat.
- Meanwhile, dip tomato slices into buttermilk, coating both sides.
- Immediately dredge slices in flour mixture; shake off excess flour mixture.
- Cook tomato slices in hot oil 3 to 5 minutes per side.
- Transfer to parchment paper or paper towels.
- Serve immediately with pepper sauce, if desired.
