Green Beans with Cherry Tomatoes

"This makes for a pretty dish and is easy to assemble. If you don't have the fresh vegetables on hand, you can easily adapt with canned goods. I get requests for the recipe all the time."

directions

  • Cook beans in water, until tender.
  • In a fry, melt butter and add garlic salt, sugar, basil, salt and pepper.
  • Swish cherry tomato halves around until barely soft and heated, but not squishy.
  • Add the drained beans and mix well.
  • (TO SAVE TIME, you can use drained canned green beans instead of fresh green beans and canned stewed tomatoes instead of fresh cherry tomatoes. Just add the canned vegetables to the butter/basil mixture and heat through. I do this frequently and it works o).

Reviews

  1. This was fabulously tasty and easy! I used fresh green beans and that seemed to make a real difference! I didn't have garlic salt so I used garlic powder instead. The combination of butter, sugar, basil and garlic is quite outstanding, and perfect for tomatoes and beans. This makes 4 really generous servings, but even so, this recipe is guaranteed to be gobbled whole... it's really exceptional. Thanks Merlot, this one will be a regular!

  2. I loved the flavor of this dish and it looks beautiful on the table. I only added a half teaspoon of sugar, as I was afraid it would be too sweet for our tastes, and it was just perfect. Great recipe, thanks for posting!

  3. AWESOME!!! I agree with all the other reviewers.

  4. I agree with all the reviews, this is super! The ultimate test was my husband, who doesn't like tomatoes... he said it was VERY good!!

  5. This was a great side dish! I do not expect my son to eat his beans, so when he finished these off, I was shocked! The basil and garlic was not too over powering (because of the sugar?) Yet the flavors all came together to enhanse the flavor of the tomatoes??? I am still not sure why these beans tasted so good to my son, or to myself. I will have to repeat this recipe many times to figure it out I guess.

Tweaks

  1. I found these really really good, due to a no salt diet in one guest, i used garlic powder instead of salt and i had to substitute thyme for basil

  2. This was a great recipe. If you use grape tomatoes instead of cherry I suggest cutting the sugar in half; it will be way to sweet otherwise.

  3. I liked this side dish - it was different a fun way to combine green beans and tomatoes. Instead of using garlic salt, I used a homemade garlic/salt/pepper combo and fresh basil instead of dried. I might cut back the sugar just a tiny bit but it was good with the full amount too.

  4. Great recipe. I used olive oil instead of butter and frozen green beans instead of fresh. I didn't have any fresh. The whole family enjoyed the beans. Will try fresh basil from my garden this summer.

  5. Very, very good. I used agave instead of sugar and it was still yummy.
