Fire Crackers

"Seasoned saltine crackers that are simple to make and add a special touch for your dips and spreads at parties. I have had these on several occasions at bachelorette parties and babies showers but was never given the recipe. My sister had them recently at a birthday party, got the recipe, and passed it on to me. Unfortunately, I don't know who to credit for this, but it's certainly a keeper!!! Was initially concerned about the amount of oil, but hey, it's party food, RIGHT? I have used whole wheat crackers and different kinds of dip/dressing mixes successfully so have fun and get creative!"

directions

  • Line crackers on ends (like dominoes) in an air-tight container.
  • In a small bowl, mix oil, dressing mix, peppers, and garlic powder.
  • Stir until all ingredients are well mixed.
  • Continue to stir to prevent the pepper from settling on the bottom of the bowl.
  • Spoon mixture evenly over crackers, like drizzling icing on a cake.
  • Close lid tightly and flip the container over every 5 minutes for about 20 minutes. Lightly shake back and forth to make sure all the crackers are coated.
  • Store in a ziplock bag. Will keep for about a week -- if they last that long!

Questions & Replies

  1. After you put the oil in the seasoning on the crackers do they stay crispy or do they get soggy I would think that they would be very Moist if they are not baked

  2. For the crackers do you bake them

  3. Has anyone tried to bake these at around 350 for maybe 8- 10 minutes? If yes, how did they turn out?

  4. I too have been making these for years. The pepper flakes don't seem to stick to the crackers. Is there a trick?

  5. Can I lay them out and use canola oil cooking spray and then put in a ziplock with the other ingredients mixed up and just keep tossing them every several minutes until fully coated? I’m craving some and realized I only have butter or spray canola oil.

Reviews

  1. Been making these for years ... but they really need to be baked in a 250 degree oven for about 15 to 20 minutes (stirring once or twice during that time). Baking gets rid of that greasy feel, but they taste fabulous.

  2. I serve these with a cheese ball and they disappear fast, every time I make them! I use the buttery club crackers and once they are coated well, I bake them at 250 degrees for 10-20 minutes (depends on your oven) flipping them over once. This helps to seal in the flavor and keep them fresh a little longer (that is, if there are any leftover!)

  3. I add dill (about 1 T) and use oyster crackers (which are easier to stir). Giving these for Christmas gifts this year with a little jar of chili seasoning.

  4. Unless you want to serve these with a cheese ball, it is much easier to make with oyster crackers: in a large bowl, mix 1/2 cup salad oil, 1 (1oz.) packet Hidden Valley Ranch Salad dressing Mix and a 12-16 oz. oyster crackers. Stir frequently for about 10-15 minutes until the crackers absorb oil/salad dressing mixture. These are addictive.

  5. I have been making this for years however I use pretzels, oyster crackers, rice chex (or any kind you like) and peanuts. Add cayenne pepper to the oil. I base the amount of cayenne by the color of the oil for heat. I also let mine sit upside down overnight. It's always the snack mix that is requested at parties.

Tweaks

  1. I use Oyster Crackers to make it a true Snack food.

  2. I actually found the recipe on Tik Tok. I used: 2 cups olive oil 1 cup crushed red pepper flakes 1 tbsp onion powder 1 tbsp garlic powder 2 packs ranch seasoning 1 tbsp cajun seasoning Make as the other recipe directs, except only put 1 ranch packet in the mix. After you've poured the mixture on the crackers and mixed it around, you'll take the 2nd ranch powder and put it dry over the crackers and mix well again. Make sure to turn the bag/container every hour or so. Let sit 24hrs to be perfect! I added all the spicy stuff because my boyfriend is a New Orleans native and LOVES spicy stuff!
