Caramel Bread Pudding

"As my son says, it is like eating French Toast for dessert. :) It is very much like French Toast with a lovely caramel sauce on it. We all like it warm best. Make sure you use a 2-quart dish. Trust me, it will boil over in your stove in a 1 1/2-quart one. Oops! And don't worry, it will fall a little bit as it cools."

Questions & Replies

  1. I've been looking for a bread pudding recipe that has a slight caramel sauce at the bottom. Dark or light brown sugar? What kind of bread? Can you give me the weight in ounces of the bread? Volume in cups can be inaccurate due to air space between the cubes. Thanks.

  2. I don't see the caramel recipe. Isn't that supposed to be the topping?

  3. Can bread pudding be made in the microwave

  1. This is a great recipe! I replaced the hot water, with cold milk and used sticky brown treacle sugar which disolves wonderfully in cold liquid. I replaced half of the milk with cream and it was gorgeous! I sprinkled the dish with brown sugar and put a little butter on the top and it made a wonderful sticky glaze. I took two dishes to a dinner party and I brought them home clean. The guests loved it. Quick and easy too!!

  2. I was a little sceptical about adding the water to this dish, and I believe it did affect the texture. It came out with the consistancy of wet scrambled eggs. Although the flavor was good. If I make this again I will omit the water and just sprinkle the brown sugar over the bread cubes before adding the remaining ingredients. Thank you for the recipe.

  3. I also made this the 1st time using hotdog buns! Imagine how much better it was this time using day old croissants? It was so good I gave the recipe to about 4 people and they've all given it raves too.

  4. I'd been craving bread pudding for weeks, haven't had it in years! Made this, like others substituted milk and half & half for the water, added raisins. It was fantastic with a custardy taste and texture. I saw others commenting on the sauce, so I made a side of caramel sauce. My husband, who is the sweet tooth of the family, said that it didn't need it so he has his with ice cream and no caramel sauce. Will definitely make again!

  5. Really really good! I substituted the extra milk in place of the water as many suggested.

Tweaks

  1. I changed the milk with whipping cream and omit the ground cinnamon. Put it in 2 dishes and baked it in air fryer. The first dish was at 180°C for 40 minutes. It became burnt bread budding. Taste was still good. The second one was bakes at 160°C for 30 minutes. Thank you for the recipe.

  2. OMG this is the best bread pudding I've ever eaten, even better than my Mom's and she was an awesome cook. I did replace the water with milk as I had some milk I needed to use up and added some raisins. Also didn't add the 1/2 cup of sugar as we don't like really sweet bread pudding. But however, you make this it is a winner. Thanks for submitting the recipe.

  3. This turned out pretty well for me! I replaced the water with milk as someone else suggested and make sure to use 7 *packed* cups of bread cubes, so it doesn't turn out too soggy. The "caramel" sauce is not so much a caramel, but a nice sweet sauce you can drizzle on top for added sweetness.

  5. I really enjoyed this bread pudding. I have made it twice now and I made a few changes the second time. I used a day old baguette instead of regular bread, added golden raisins, and doubled the amount of cinnamon and vanilla. I preferred it with the extra cinnamon and vanilla, and raisins, as it was good the first time, but I felt it needed a little extra punch of flavor. Either way it was good, thanks for a great recipe.
