Watergate Salad

"This recipe is different from, and more detailed than, any of the others on this site. (The "Cook" time is really the "Refrigerate" time.)"

  1. I'm NOT on a diet, especially on a holiday. Thanks a lot for putting this recipe up. I lost my tried &true recipe &we all LOVE it! I'm gettin a wee bit tired of folks who write reviews to tell us certain recipes, including some of mine, are high in calories or fat or they are made w/some processed ingredients etc.I've got a conscience of my own and can make my own choices and I don't need anyone pointing out to me how much fat a certain dish on food.com contains. Please, site managers, you say you read reviews before you post them-this is America. We are each responsible for our own choices. Tx again Ozma for posting this delicious and most beloved recipe!!!

  2. Thank you for the recipe. I have not made this yet, but I will be during the next holiday.... or sooner. I agree with the last post. There are times when the old recipes and memories are just more important then the calories. If you don't want the calories then don't eat it. But don't spoil it for the rest of us who want to eat may just a small or even a bit portion of a wonderful meal or desert. It's none of anyone's business. I know it's none of mine. Yet I have health concerns and have lost a lot of weight, so before you go thinking all those nasty thought, just put them away. I feel for both sides and that's why I know it's none of ANYONE'S business. Thanks for letting me rant and again, thanks for the wonder recipe that I have missed for so long.

  3. Love this "green stuff", as my family calls it!! Been making it forever, experimenting somewhat along the way with other add-ins. I've noticed that some cans of pineapple have more juice than others, so I started draining it first then adding enough back to get the right consistency so it doesn't end up soupy. Sometimes, it doesn't need any of it. Most times, I throw in more marshmallows than called for and about 1/3 cup of flaked coconut. An 8 oz tub of Cool Whip is plenty even with my extras and the sugar-free/fat-free pudding mix works well also.

  4. I'm curious what you mean by 2 c. Cool Whip. Are you going by the packaging (one small tub is 8 oz., the large ones are 16 oz.)? I went by the packaging, using a 16 oz. tub of Cool Whip. I doubled all the other ingredients, and it came out perfect. Technically, you probably want to go with 8 oz. of Cool Whip instead of 2 cups, just to clarify. :)

  5. in my recipe, I use mandarin orange slices, drained, right from the can, instead of pineapple and a small jar of maraschino cherries, drained my family calls it the green death, you could die from the sweetness.

Tweaks

  1. 2 cups heavy cream whipped instead of non-dairy whipped topping. 1 cup chopped pecans instead of 1/2 cup of unspecified nuts. 1/2 cup flaked or grated coconut.

  2. I have a similar recipe however instead of minituree marshmallows, I use a large jar of marshmallow cream

I'm the holiday cook, as my husband does the daily cooking, bless him. I did ALL the cooking for the first 15 years, and got burned out on the everyday stuff. I feel your envy. :) I've been a computer programmer for many years. So if you have computer questions, I'm your go-to gal. As a once-upon-a-time flower child, I'm older and bolder, wiser and wilder.
