Sweet Potato Chili

"Sweet potatoes are an unusual yet delicious addition to this chili and as a bonus you get more orange veggies into your diet! The small amount of sausage also keeps the fat content low without a sacrifice in flavour. Sizes and amounts are flexible."

  1. This is one of the best chili recipes I have ever made. I substituted 2-15 oz. cans of black beans for the kidney beans and used only 1/4 tsp of cayenne to keep down the heat. The presence of the sweet potato gives this chili a subtle sweetness.

  2. This is my favorite chili recipe, I was really glad to find it here. I generally use 1lb of bulk italian sausage, 2 cans of beans (usually one kidney, one white beans), and serve with sour cream. Best chili ever, and not too spicy, so kids love it.

  3. This was delicious and so easy to make!! I didn't have Italian sausage so I used a lb of lean ground beef. The results were very yummy! Thanks for this awesome recipe!!

  4. Oh my, Boxerwing, this is beyond what I expected! I used 3 italian sausages (turkey), and added an extra small can of diced tomatoes. Absolutely yum! Low fat, savory, and filling. thanks you so much!

I work as a part-time nurse in our city's burn unit. In my spare time, I really enjoy browsing cookbooks, cooking magazines, and the web for recipes. I am always looking for new ways to combine common ingredients to mix things up a bit. I try to avoid recipes that call for bizarre or hard-to-get ingredients or require a special kitchen widget I will only use once. If someone were to give me something unusual, I certainly would give it a try! However, my husband and I are adventurous diners and are always willing to try something new at least twice (in case there was a problem the first time!) We enjoy everything from German to Japanese; we want to try Vietnamese next. My husband and I own a Gold Wing motorcycle and love to travel in the warmer months. We also have three dogs: Roxy, who is a rather large (42 lb.) fox terrier cross (shown above, with me!), Shadow, who is pure-bred reverse-brindle boxer, and Maggie, a brindle boxer. They love it when "Mom" cooks because they know something yummy inevitably hits the floor!
