A bony, barracudalike, oily-fleshed fish (Thyrsites atun) from the Gempylidae family and popular in South Africa. Snoek is has lots of bones and is similar to mackerel. Snoek may be smoked, grilled with apricot glaze, mashed into pate, or braised in a rice dish called smoorvis. Snoek roe is a delicacy. Canned snoek became available in England after WWII and became popular.
