On Saturday morning, the Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, was buzzing with activity. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, volunteers were assembled, ready to canvass the town and hand out 4,500 Butterball turkeys to residents. They were not, however, ready for the surprise celebrity appearance that they were about to be treated to.
Matthew McConaughey went live on Facebook from inside the distillery immediately before his appearance.
“Eddie Russell [a master distiller for Wild Turkey] is about to invite me on; hopefully we’ll surprise them,” he said of the crowd to the camera, adding quickly, “and it’s my birthday.”
The actor, who turned 48 this weekend, popped out and addressed the crowd, thanking them for giving up their Saturdays in order “to make some people happy, put some smiles on some faces, deliver some turkeys.” He then went from door to door to about 12 Lawrenceburg households doing just that. He even paid a visit to Russell’s mother.
Matthew McConaughey was hired last year as a creative director and spokesman for the distillery. Since then, the bourbon brand has seen a 14.6 percent increase in sales, according to People. Driving sales is nothing new for McConaughey, who starred in a wildly successful series of advertisements for Lincoln beginning in 2011. The ads, though seen by some as silly, gave the floundering car company a 25 percent bump in the month following their release.
Perhaps it has something to do with his signature charm, which was on full display for the people of Lawrenceburg on Saturday.
“Just keep livin’,” he told them, “thanks for being here.”
