NJ Baseball Team to Celebrate 25 Years with ‘Pork Roll’ Jerseys

When the Trenton Thunder takes the field on May 18th for their first baseball game of the season, fans may be surprised to find the minor league team a bit… tastier… than usual.
That’s because May 18th will be a celebration of the team’s 25th anniversary, and they’re going to be commemorating the occasion by rebranding themselves as the “Thunder Pork Roll” in honor of a local mystery meat beloved by New Jerseyans everywhere. This rebrand will include an overhaul of the team uniform, which will now feature meaty pink lettering and a hammy hat.
On opening night, the first 1,025 attendees (aged 21 and over, for some reason) will be treated to a special “Pork Roll apron giveaway.” The event will also be sponsored by Case’s Pork Roll, so naturally $1 “Pork Roll” sandwiches will be on sale, along with other limited-edition pork-related goodies.
After opening night, the team will continue to don the meat-centric jerseys every Friday throughout the season.
"Pork Roll is a New Jersey staple that can be served on everything from breakfast sandwiches to burgers and we're thrilled to celebrate it on a daily basis at Arm and Hammer Park," said Thunder General Manager and COO Jeff Hurley in a release. "Rebranding ourselves as the Thunder Pork Roll on Friday nights is the perfect way to celebrate a Garden State favorite!"
Surprisingly enough, the Trenton Thunder will not be the only Double-A baseball team named after a type of tubular meat this year; off in Illinois, the Chicago Dogs will be playing their first season. That’s “Dogs” as in “hot dogs.”
If you were curious about the excessive use of quotations in this article, you might have guessed that its writer disagrees with the use of the term “Pork Roll,” which hereafter should be referred to (by you and everyone you know) as “Taylor Ham,” which is its correct name (it’s a north-versus-south thing; you can read about it literally anywhere).
No matter what you call it, this Spam-like delicacy is salty and fatty and crispy and goes great with a slice of American cheese. And that’s worth celebrating any day.
