Phillies Mascot Sends Fan to Hospital with Hot Dog Cannon

The baseball stadium cannon is generally a tool for spreading joy, happiness and t-shirts. Yet there are times when we are reminded of the tiny detail that it is, in fact, still a cannon.
One such moment occurred on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, when the St. Louis Cardinals took on the Phillies and a middle-aged woman took on a duct-taped hot dog.
Kathy McVie was sitting in her seat when the team’s mascot, the Phillies Phanatic, fired a hot dog into the stands. McVie saw the hot dog coming straight toward her but, with an injured shoulder awaiting surgery, she was unable to protect herself.
“It came out of nowhere,” she told Philadelphia’s WPVI. “It hit me like a ton of bricks.”
The hot dog, which was wrapped in tape (to protect its integrity and to make it as projectile-like as possible), smacked her straight in the face, knocking off her glasses and giving her what she later discovered to be a small hematoma.
McVie left the game and went to the hospital to have her injuries assessed. She was left with a black eye that needs plenty of ice. A big fan of the Phillies, she does not intend to sue.
While McVie pointed out that her injury should be a reminder to pay attention at baseball games, she also managed to find some humor in the crazy story.
"It gives people a good laugh, and if that makes somebody chuckle, then that's fine," she said.
