Opt for a bright pink sponge that will look just like watermelon.

Slice It Up

Cut your vibrant pink cakes into as many layers as you'd like.

pipe black rings for a seedy slice!

Extra credit: For even more watermelon flavor, brush each layer with watermelon jolly rancher syrup.

SKY HIGH

Layer your cakes as high as you dare for XXL fun.

Give your cakes a trim

Cut your browned edges to expose the watermelon in waiting.

Start the watermelon transformation

Crumb coat your cake, then add your watermelon pink buttercream on top.

Now let’s add the rind

Starting with white buttercream, pipe on a thin layer of frosting.

Layer on light green

This rind will taste better than the real thing.

MAKE IT LOOK REAL

Paint melted dark green buttercream stripes. No need to be fussy, regular watermelon stripes aren’t perfect either!

Finishing touches

Trim the chilled buttercream to reveal your glorious watermelon cross-section.

Pipe on your black seeds to complete the cake

Or leave them out, if you prefer seedless watermelons.

Serve Up Some Slices

Cutting slices like these will impress your picnic guests, and maybe even trick them into thinking they're munching on fruit!
