15! Bean Soup!

"I like bean soups since they're cheap, easy to make, and healthy comfort food. I've never made 15 bean soup before this, but I loved the way this one turned out so I had to post it so I wouldn't forget. It ended up being a combination of things I had around and wanted/needed to get rid of...either way, this is yummy! I didn't add the meat off the bone, but if you like it...feel free! Great for cozying up when it's cold or watching football (or hockey!)."

  1. What a great comfort meal? I used the quick soak method with a bag of 16 bean soup mix that came with a seasoning packet. For the veggies, I chopped up what was left of a veggie tray that had carrots, broccoli, celery and tomatoes. I assumed the seasoning salt in the ingredients list was separate from the seasoning packet that came with the beans so I added the seasoning salt in the beginning with the rest of the ingredients and since the instructions on the bag of beans said not to add the packet until the last hour, for the crock-pot I added the packet about 2 hours before it was done. Instead of a ham hock or ham bone, I added a sliced up smoked beef sausage at the same time that I added the packet of seasoning. Served with cornbread. Excellent!!

  2. I had a bag of cajun 15 bean soup mix and wanted to use it in the crockpot recipe so was happy I found this one. Instead of the tomato paste I used an open can of tomato paste -about 3 oz. I didn't add the boullion cubes and felt they weren't missed. I also added a drained can of corn. It made a nice hearty soup full of beans & veggies. Served with cornbread & a salad.

  3. Okay, so I followed this recipe mostly. Having never made bean soup, I followed the quick cook method for dry beans. I was suprised at how much the beans swelled. The ham hocks grossed me out a bit, but they added nice flavor. Anyway, my family loved this soup. Cheap, simple...what more could you ask for?

I am a Colorado ski bum at heart, but am currently stuck in Miami, FL of all places working on my Doctoral degree in physical therapy at UM. I can't wait until I graduate and can get back to the mountains! 2 more years, 2 more years...I love to cook and find it a great way to relax and slow down after classes and I can't wait until I have more free time to be able to do it. I have been in the Air National Guard with Colorado and Florida for the last four years and have been fortunate enough to taste many different foods and stretch my palate. I have lots of recipes waiting to be posted and when I finally get the time I will, so stand by!
