Albanian Date Cookies

"This recipe is from week four of my food blog, "Travel by Stove." I am attempting to cook one meal from every country on Earth, and Albania is my fourth stop. These little cookies are not very sweet, but they are delicious. The date on top is more than enough to make up for what the dough lacks in sugar."

directions

  • Put the orange juice, oil and vanilla extract into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients, then add to the orange juice mixture until a soft dough forms.
  • Break off pieces of the dough and roll into 1 1/2 inch balls. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, and press one date into the center of each cookie.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool.
  • After the cookies have cooled, spread the crushed walnuts out on a plate. Mix together the water, sugar and lemon juice in a small saucepan and bring just to a boil over the stove.
  • Dip each cookie into the syrup, then press the bottom of the cookie into the walnuts. Repeat until all the cookies are done.

Questions & Replies

  1. Dumb question! I assume there are 3 doz, pitted dates needed for this recipe, but what do I know!?

  2. Does the entire cookie get dunked in the warm sauce or just the bottom where the walnuts will be pressed?

I am a mother of two with another one on the way! I am married to an Englishman and we own a small business in our local area. We live in a very small town called Rough and Ready (yes there really is a place called Rough and Ready!) I am a part-time writer and full time mom. My kids were born 15 months apart and keep me so busy I barely have enough time to cook and no time at all for my other passion, horseback riding. I once had four horses but am down to two; my Arab mare Argo and old Denver. Both of them spend the vast majority of their time standing around in my back yard eating hay. I get to feed them and look at them, but until my kids are all in school (and I stop having more kids) that's about it. <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/Adopted1smp.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket">
