  1. combine sugar and almonds. Reserve 1/2 cup of this mixture.
  2. Thoroughly cream shortening and remaining sugar-almond mixture.
  3. Add whole egg and egg yolk.
  4. Beat well.
  5. Add flour, lemon zest and lemon juice.
  6. Mix well.
  7. Spread in greased 9" square pan.
  8. Brush with egg white.
  9. Sprinkle with reserved sugar-almond mixture.
  10. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes.
