  • In a large pot, brown the ground beef and the two chopped onions, stirring frequently to ensure the beef is broken up; drain.
  • Add the remaining chili ingredients except the remaining chopped onion, mixing well.
  • Simmer over low heat for 1 hour and 45 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Add remaining onion to the sauce and simmer an additional 15 minutes, stirring occasionally (chili freezes well for up to 3 months).
  • Assembly--place grilled hot dogs in toasted buns and top with mustard, chili, cheese, and onion.
  • Serve immediately.

  1. I can tell just by looking at the ingredients it will NOT taste like Deerhead Chili.
     
  2. Not close and yes too spicy. The sauce actually doesn’t have any beef in it at all. I know this because I dated a girl that worked there. It’s actually beans.
     
  3. Not even close, as a young child I would get Doghead hot dogs in Wilmington, DE in a little hole in the wall cafe on Orange St. There was always a line for them. The sauce was a light creamy yellow, brown color and we always got them with everything, This recipe is way to spicy. The texture was all wrong and WAY WAY to hot with seasoning.
     
  4. Never had a Deerhead Chili Dog. But this is a superb hot dog chili. Perfect texture and consistency with assertive flavors. Made the best chili dog I think I have ever had. Very happy.
