  • 1 lb loaf cinnamon raisin bread, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 8 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups milk
  • 14 teaspoon salt
  • 14 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
  • 12 cup slivered almonds, toasted
  • ground cinnamon
  • powdered sugar

  • Spread bread pieces in a greased 3-quart rectangular baking dish.
  • In a big bowl, beat the eggs, milk, salt, and almond extract together with a whisk.
  • Stir in apple pie filling and half of the almonds.
  • Carefully pour apple mixture over the bread.
  • Press bread pieces down into the egg mixture with a wooden spoon; sprinkle with the remaining almonds.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 2-24 hours.
  • Bake strata in a preheated 325° oven, uncovered, for 50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Let stand for 15 minutes before serving.
  • Lightly sprinkle cinnamon and/or sifted powdered sugar over the top before serving.
