  1. Cream together shortening and sugar.
  2. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beat until light and fluffy.
  3. Stir in 1 cup apple butter.
  4. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with sour milk.
  6. Turn into 2 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes.
  8. Cool throughly.
  9. Spread bottom layer of cake with 1/4 cup apple butter.
  10. Top with frosting.
  11. Cover with top cake layer.
  12. Frost top and sides with any marshmallow frosting.
  13. Swirl remaining apple butter on top for a marbled effect.
