ingredients

¹⁄₂ cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup sugar
¹⁄₂ cup shortening, soft
2 eggs
2 teaspoons orange rind, grated
2 cups apples, peeled and chopped
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups flour, sifted
1 ¹⁄₂ teaspoons baking powder
¹⁄₂ teaspoon baking soda
¹⁄₂ teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
¹⁄₂ cup pecans, chopped
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

directions

Mix sugars, shortening, eggs, and orange rind until smooth and creamy. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add buttermilk and flour mixture alternately to sugar mixture. Stir in apples. Pour into greased 8 x 12" pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle pecans and sugar and spice on top of cake. Bake in moderate oven (350*) about 45 minutes.
