  • Squeeze the juice from the orange and set the juice aside. Remove and discard the membrane from inside the orange rind and cut the rind into small dice.
  • In a small saucepan over high heat, combine the rind and the water and bring to a boil.
  • Cook for 10 minutes, then drain and set aside.
  • Peel, core and quarter the apple. Cut into 1/2-inch dice and place in a saucepan. Sort the cranberries, discarding any soft ones.
  • Add to the apples along with the orange juice, orange rind, sugar, cinnamon and cloves.
  • Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce the heat to low and cover the pan partially. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, the apple is tender and the cranberries have burst, 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Transfer the cranberry sauce to a heatproof bowl and let cool for 1 hour before serving. Or cover and refrigerate; bring to room temperature before serving. Transfer the cranberry sauce to a sauce boat and pass at the table.

  1. Thanks so much for posting! I've been making this for years (got it from the WS catalogue years ago)...I get requests to make this every year. Couldn't find the catalogue this year, you've saved Turkey Day!

  2. I first tried this at William-Sonoma... I LOVE IT! This Recipe is wonderful.... Just make sure you cut up the rind small enough. I had a friend that made it and they were huge lol. She missed the "small" dice.

  3. This was delicious with turkey, but for some reason I found that it was much, much targer the next day. That was easily remedied by reheating and adding a tad more sugar. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Omg so good! I hate cranberry sauce, but I could eat this right out of the pot, and I have been lol. It makes a lot, so am freezing 3 small bags for Xmas. Try it, youll love it

  5. This was very excellent. I played with it a little by substituting 1 cup of orange juice for one cup of water, 1 cup of maple syrup for the sugar and added 1 cup chopped dried apricots, <br/>1 tbsp orange zest and 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar. This one is a keeper! Thank you.

  2. Made this for Thanksgiving with a few changes--used Splenda instead of sugar and only used the zest of the orange--by far the best homemade cranberry sauce we've ever had! The cranberry lovers in my family say thanks for a great recipe!
