directions

  • Combine the soy sauce, sugar, garlic, lime juice, ginger and red pepper flakes in a wide, shallow baking pan that will hold all of the fish in a single layer.
  • Stir briefly to dissolve the sugar.
  • Add the tilapia, then turn it over so that it's coated all over with the marinade.
  • Set aside for 20 min or so.
  • Heat the broiler to high, and move the oven rack to position closest to heat.
  • Slide the pan into the oven, and broil the fish for 5 minute Keep the oven door ajar so the broiler element stays lit.
  • Turn the pan around (back to front), and broil for 5 more minute.
  • If the juices in the pan appear to burn, add a little water to the dry spot to prevent burning.
  • The fish should be opaque and flaky.
  • Spoon the sauce over the fish when serving.

  1. We LOVE this recipe! I've been using it now for about 4 years or so, we love it with Coconut ginger rice and broccoli. I use the full recipe of sauce although I don't usually use a full pound of tilapia. I also marinade the fish for longer than 20 minutes if at all possible because it tastes SO good!

  2. Wow....LOVED this. And I'm lukewarm on Asian food and tilapia. Like many recipes, I doubled (approx) the sauce. Used half to marinate and half I added approx 1 heaping tsp of coconut flour and reduced into a sauce in a separate pan. I was low on tilapia and had a guest so I also added a piece of mahi and it was delicious as well. I served with steamed broccoli and an Asian cabbage salad mix from Costco and this meal was a huge hit. Every plate clean and moaning about no seconds. Will make again SOON.

  3. This was incredible!! Like other reviewers I doubled the sauce and then reduced it on the stove after the Tilapia was done, adding about a tbs of flour and a tsp of honey. We served it with brown rice and broccoli. My boys (5 & 3) loved it and my 5 yo had 3rds!

  4. Looked and smelled amazing, but my pan shattered when I took out of oven. Ugh!

  5. I liked this a LOT. I also doubled the marinade and used half on my stir-fry veggies that I served with it. I added it when the veg were almost done, so as not to overcook any of the marinade ingredients. Served it with brown rice. Yum!

Tweaks

  1. I was looking for a new recipe for tilapia when this one caught my eye. I've been trying to get my family to eat tilapia, without much success. It would either come out dry, or flavorless. We all love Asian flavors, and this certainly fit the bill. I tweaked it a bit for us - used low sodium soy sauce, substituted splenda for the sugar, used 2 Tbsp of rice wine vinegar instead of the lime juice, added about a tsp of sesame oil, and doubled the crushed pepper. The fish was very moist and delicious. NO LEFTOVERS!!! Thank you for posting the recipe!

  2. Love this recipe! I always add honey instead of sugar and a bit more red pepper flakes just because we love spice. Thank you!!

  3. This dish was great! I'd never cooked with tilapia before and this was a yummy introduction. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was that it was too salty by far. I will definitely make it again, as I loved the flavor combination of the lime and garlic and red pepper but will probably substitute half of the soy sauce with rice wine or sherry. With frozen tilapia fillets and ingredients found in the cupboard, the dish came together in a matter of 10 minutes --a valuable addition to the "what am I going to cook for dinner in the next 15 minutes so we don't have to order out" category. Thanks SkinnieMinnie

My name is Robin, and welcome to my about me page. I will try to be as brief as possible, but I tend to be long winded. If you get bored at anytime, feel free to move on...I won't be offended. I was born in the great city of New Orleans, but have had the pleasure of travelling and living all over the place. My parents moved to Lafayette, Louisiana when I started high school. After high school, I was a nanny and lived in England (London). I miss it A LOT!! England, not the being a nanny part. I lived and got married in California (Los Angeles), but we moved back to Lafayette to be closer to family. Well, to make a long story short, things didn't work out and we got a D-I-V-O-R-C-E!!! After that, I packed up and moved to Texas (Beaumont). I met the love of my life (Toby) on-line - believe it or not - and he whisked me away to Kentucky (Louisville). Which is where I lay my head and call home now. I absolutely love it here!! I love having seasons!! The trees changing colors in Fall and snow in the Winter, along with a BEAUTIFUL Spring and HOT Summer!! We live in the house Toby grew up in, and are about to start doing some MUCH needed renovations! (I DEMAND A BIGGER KITCHEN!!) I have recently (this past year) started growing my own herbs. I threw in a few tomato plants for good measure :D. Now I have the bug!! I want more more MORE!! So Toby has so lovingly decided to make me an actual garden. This way I can grow all sorts of fun stuff!! I can't wait!! I love fresh home grown veggies and stuff!! And NOTHING beats fresh herbs!!! Toby has a son (Zach, 11) from a previous marriage. I guess that would make me the wicked stepmom.....I hope not!!! We also have in our lovely family 2 dogs (Daisy, a Cockapoo who runs the house and Missy, a Black Lab), a cat (Mystery), and a ferret (Flower). I am a stay at home stepmom (that is my job), so I have all day to cook and look up different recipes. I LOVE it!! I have figured out that I can cook twice as much if I give half of what I cook away....LOL!! This means Toby's business partner and his wife eat just as well as we do!! They have told me on many occasions, that if I can't take Toby anymore they will add on to their house to make room for me. All I have to do is cook!! LOL!! My parents are foodies and I TOTALLY blame them for my passion for food!! I will try anything once. I have found that I really do like some things I "thought" I hated. Although, I do still HATE (green)peas!! Here is my rating key for reviews: ***** = HEAVEN - I would not change a thing!! **** = Was VERY good, but would make a few changes *** = Not a bad recipe, but would make quite a few changes if I made it again ** = Would have to make a lot of changes to enjoy * = Didn't enjoy it at all, and will probably not make again.
