Aunt Natalies Date Cake
"This comes from my Aunt Natalie, and has long been a family favorite.
After you pour the batter into the pan and top with the chips, brown sugar & nuts, push them into them into the batter so they incorporate into the mix.
my children always loved to watch the dates and soda mixture foam !"

- 1 1⁄2 cups boiling water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1⁄2 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 beaten eggs
- 1 3⁄4 cups flour
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
- 3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 (12 ounce) package chocolate chips
- 1⁄2 cup brown sugar
- 1⁄2 cup walnuts
directions
- boil dates, take off stove, add baking soda, let stand to cool.
- cream together, shortening,sugar,eggs,add cooled date mixture.
- sift together,flour,salt,soda,mix all of the above and spread into a 9x11 pan.
- pour over and push into the batter,walnuts,brown sugar,chocolate chips.
- bake at 350 for 35 minutes, check after 30 minutes.
