ingredients
- 7 slices bread
- 3⁄4 cup fruit, anything you like (raisins, dried cranberries, dried cherries, peaches)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 eggs, well beaten
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons butter (top with before baking)
- 1⁄4 cup sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon (it's best not to use all the mixture, cover to taste.)
-
Sauce
- 4 ounces butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
directions
- Break 4 pieces of break into baking dish (I use a 2 1/2 quart Corelle dish), add fruit, and break remaining bread into dish. Combine all ingredients and pour over the bread. Take fork and press bread into mixture to saturate all bread. Dot with butter. Sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture on top. Let sit for 15 minutes.
- Bake at 375°F for one hour or until a knife comes out clean. It will puff up real big and then collapse after cooling, leaving a very crispy top. It also comes out very dark brown.
-
Sauce:
- Over med heat in a small sauce pan melt 4 tbs. butter and 2 tbs flour and make a blond rough. Then add the can of evaporated milk and cup of sugar and 1 tsp of vanilla. Cook till boiling and thick. Serve warm.
