Baked Macaroni and Cheese

"This is the macaroni & cheese that I grew up on. It's still my favorite. I like the cheese on top crispy. It is almost like Anthony Bourdain's mom made. Hope you enjoy it too."

directions

  • Cook shells in boiling water until barely al-dente.
  • Drain well.
  • Heat oven to 400 deg.F and grease a 13 x 9 inches baking dish.
  • Put about 1/3 of the shells in prepared dish. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp salt, pepper and 1/3 of the cheese. Dot with 1/ tbsp butter. Repeat layers twice more, ending with the remaining cheese. Don't push down on the shells or it will make it too dense. Pour milk over top.
  • Bake 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how crisp you like the top.

  1. This was good and just like my mom use to make. I did cut back to three cups of milk and would cut it down to two cups next time. I didn't measure the salt and pepper. Mine took over an hour to cook. I made this grilled sausage and we all enjoyed it.

  2. Delish! I, too, mix the butter and pasta together before layering. So easy!

  3. sounds great; can't wait to try it!

  4. This is a great recipe. I've made it twice now. I mix the butter with the cooked noodles. I never seem to have shredded cheese . I've made it with cubes of cheese the first time and slices the next (4c of shredded cheese is about 1 lb block) and it still comes out perfect. Thanks for the good eats!

  5. This is a wonderful recipe for the ULTIMATE in comfort food. I cut the recipe in half and used Kraft Classic Melts 4 Cheese in the recipe. Absolutely will put this into our regular dinner rotation. Next time I may add a little Louisiana Hot Sauce for a little kick. I made this to serve with Brats on the grill, green beans with onions and steamed carrots. Dinner was very filling. DH gave his thumb up (between forkfuls). Thanks for sharing a truly great recipe!!!

I am the proud great-grandmother of four. I love to cook and never tire of looking for good recipes. Needless to say, on Zaar there's many great ones. I've been cooking for my next door neighbor and best friend, Curt, for several years now. He is such a good sport for letting me experiment on him. ;) He will be helping me with any reviews. A big thank you in advance to those who have tried one of my recipes. <img src="http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/MrsTeny/Permanent%20Collection/PACSpring09Iwasadopted.jpg">
