Baklava

"My husband got this recipe years ago from a person living in Greece as a trade for a gmail invitation, back when gmail first started. I have a fear of filo and try to avoid it but Cam has made this and it is very good. *****I'm not sure what a no. 4 package of filo is... Cam seems to remember using a 1 lb package of filo and dividing it into two."

  • Syrup: Prepare syrup by dissolving sugar in water in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add lemon juice.
  • Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  • Assembly: Line a baking tray with 2 sheets of filo dough.
  • Brush the top with melted butter.
  • Line two more sheets and brush with butter.
  • Continue in this manner until the first package of filo is done.
  • Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon and sugar in a bowl.
  • Spread walnut mixture on filo dough.
  • Repeat the dough and butter procedure with the second package of filo, except the last five sheets.
  • For the last five sheets, butter each separately.
  • Finish by brushing all the remaining butter on top.
  • Cut into diamond shapes or squares.
  • Bake in 350 F oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Cool for 10 minutes.
  • Pour syrup onto baklava.
  • Serve at room temperature.
