directions

  • Dissolve the borax in the water in a glass measuring cup.
  • Set aside.
  • Mix together the oil and beeswax in another glass measuring cup.
  • Place the glass cup in a pan of water (about 1-2 inches of water), making a water bath.
  • Heat the oil-beeswax mixture in the water bath over medium heat until the beeswax is melted, stirring occasionally.
  • This takes about 10 minutes.
  • When the wax is melted, bring the borax-water mixture almost to a boil.
  • You can do this by putting the glass cup in the microwave on HIGH for 1 minute.
  • Otherwise, you may heat it on the stove top in a water bath.
  • Remove the mixture from the water bath.
  • Slowly add the borax-water mixture to it, stirring briskly.
  • (You can also put the mixtures in the blender and whip).
  • Pour the cream into a clean container with a lid.
  • To use, massage a small amount into your skin and tissue off or rinse off with warm water.
  • Note: The mixture will become white and fluffy but will be a bit runny until it has cooled completely.
  • Once it has cooled, you will have a nice basic cold cream ready.
  • Since no perfumes have been added, it will remain unscented.
  • If you choose to prepare a cold cream with a fragrance, just add a few drops of your favourite scent as the mixture is cooling.

  1. I bought this book and tried this recipe and the grape seed lotion recipe using grape seed oil, which is suppose to be "light". Both of these recipes were so greasy I could not use it. I followed the directions. The borax did not dissolve in the water before I microwaved it, but I doubt if that made that much difference. Making this was a waste of time and money.

  2. Despite it's name, mineral oil is just awful for your skin. It puts a coating on it, and it suffocates your skin. No air gets to it, and it is extremely pore clogging. Mineral oil is not bad for some foot products, but that's about all. Please use caution with this recipe.

  3. I wouldn't use mineral oil, as it is a petroleum by-product & will dry out skin with repeated use. I'd recommend a light oil such as sweet almond, hazelnut or calendula for this. Also, borax will not dissolve in water if it's not hot. It will settle out of solution as it cools. I'd heat the oil/beeswax in microwave and put borax in waterbath. Make sure fragrance is skin-safe &, if you're using essential oils, be mindful of dilution rates. Some essential oils are not recommended if you're pregnant. Hope this helps.

  4. I LOVE THIS!! (and yes, that is shouting! :D) I make this in double or triple batches and store in mustard/ketchup picnic style bottles. I scent each one differently and dispense into smaller lotion bottles to hand out to my friends as little gifts.
