Bessie's Soft Ginger Cookies

"This is my late grandmother's recipe for soft ginger cookies - circa early 1900s (she was born in 1895). My dad's favorite cookie recipe ever and a Christmas staple!"

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Cream sugar and shortening.
  • Add salt and molasses and mix well.
  • Add sour milk and 3 beaten eggs.
  • Add dry ingredients.
  • Mix well and drop on greased cookie sheet (i just use parchment paper on a regular cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for approx 7-10 minutes.
  • Please note the dough is not as firm as most cookie doughs are and you may question whether or not you added enough flour, but they turn out just fine. My husband likes to sprinkle sugar on top of the dough before baking but that is completely optional.
