Bishops Bread

"This is a Christmas tradition in my family. My mom got the recipe out of a church cookbook in the 50's. I usually make 3 loafs at a time. It is wonderful! Even those who hate fruitcake love this!"

Questions & Replies

  1. This recipe is almost identical to my grandmother's- with the exception she added brazil nuts. At the end of her notes- she says to wrap it in a towel soaked in orange juice. Have you heard of this? Thanks! Pam

  2. I was thinking about adding fresh cherries and marinate them in the best cherry liquor? Heering 200 It taste like a fresh cherry.

  1. This bread is sooooo good. My mother made it in the 60's and I've never forgot how delicious it was. The candied cherrys are wonderful, but hard to find and full of nasty fruit coloring. I substitute read dried cherries, or even canned cherries, patted very dry before adding to the batter. I'm so glad you found and posted this classic recipe.

  2. Wonderful recipe-small world, I have this same recipe from a close family friend who used to make and send it every year, at Christmas. It isn't Christmas without this Bishop's Bread!

  3. This is also a Christmas tradition in our family! I use marachino cherries and 1/2 C. pecans and omit the dates. I find the cherry juice helps the bread from getting too dry.

  4. Traditional recipe is for Maraschino cherries (not candied) and no dates (yuk!). Just the cherries , walnuts, and chocolate chips. I suppose you could put in whatever fruit you like, but have been making this bread for over 40 years, and that is the traditional way.

  5. I made this for the first time last Christmas (it's a tradition in my DH's family). This is SOOOOOO good. I'm not a big fan of fruitcake and this is definitely for those like me. Instead of the chocolate chips, we use chopped semisweet chocolate but other than that its the same. We call it "Bishop's Cake" as well. Thanks for posting Bekah!!

  2. Bekah, thank you so much for posting this recipe. I used to make this bread for every holiday in the seventies and then lost the cookbook that contained it. (Don't lend out your cookbooks!)This is almost the same one; mine called for chopped up Hershey bars instead of chips, pecans instead of walnuts, and maraschinos instead of candied cherries. I'm making some more loaves this weekend to put in the freezer--yum!
