Black 'n' White Brownies

"This recipe is from Laurie Knoke as posted on allrecipes.com. It is similar to recipe # 358828, but it also includes a frosting. It's a nice "special" brownie, and my husband likes them even though he doesn't like walnuts. I haven't tried omitting them, but I'm sure the results would be fine."

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Grease a 9 by 13 dish.
  • Combine 3/4 cup flour, sugar, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • Stir in oats and coconut.
  • Melt 2/3 cup butter and add to mixture.
  • Add 2 tablespoons milk and mix well.
  • Press into dish and bake for 10-12 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and reduce temperature to 325°F.
  • Melt 1/3 cup butter with the chocolate.
  • In a large bowl, combine eggs, brown sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  • Add melted chocolate and mix well.
  • Add 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt, and mix well.
  • Chop walnuts.
  • Stir in 1/2 cup walnuts.
  • Spread evenly over first layer and bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.
  • Cool.
  • Meanwhile combine cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla, and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy.
  • Spread over cooled brownies.
  • Sprinkle 1/4 cup walnuts over the frosting.
  • Serve immediately or store in refridgerator.
