British Beans on Toast

"Great snack to munch on while watching your favorite British programs. Drink with Strongbow cider ;-) Tip: DO NOT USE AMERICAN Pork & Beans, Boston Baked Beans or "Bush's Beans" etc... ONLY Heinz or Batchelor's brand please, otherwise it might be gross. Don't worry; most American grocery stores sell HEINZ and BATCHELOR'S, in the International/European/English/Irish aisle. I've been all over the US and found them in Safeway, Kroger, Stop & Shop, etc. I've never not been able to find one of those two brands in the USA."

Questions & Replies

  1. I live in Richmond, VA, USA. I've searched everywhere for the Heinz baked beans. Does anyone know where I can find them or buy them on line? I agree--the Bush's just aren't the same. Closest I came was a store brand from Aldi's called navy beans in tomato sauce, but still not the same.

  1. What happens if you use pork and beans or Bush's beans?

  2. I just tried this for the first time and I see why it's a hit. I'd been hunting for high protein breakfasts that are non-meat/non-dairy, thinking beans or lentils, and figured I'd better try it as my wife is of English ancestry. Thank you to the other reviewers! -- I can't wait to eat it again, maybe with some HP sauce.

  3. Thank YOU for posting an honest-to-goodness "regular" recipe for Beans on Toast...the offiicial food of college students and hangover sufferers! LOL I've been eating this for years, just as you posted it and Heinz Baked Beans from the U.K. are the ONLY way to make it! As a twist, when we're really ravenous is to toast the bread and butter it, make the beans, and add a slice of good English Cheddar on top of the toast before dumping on the beans. Even when I have a pocketful of money, sometimes you just need the simplest and cheapest of comfort foods to make the day feel better!

  4. For years I have read about beans on toast in Harlequin romances. I always wondered if there was actually a recipe. Fun to realize there is. Even so, I have an American version: Slice of white bread, untoasted, and generously buttered. Campbell's Pork and Beans heated with a Farmer John's hot dog. Put hot dog on bread, spoon on beans and sprinkle on grated Cheddar cheese. Add finely chopped sweet onion if desired. Eat this dish accompanied with non-fat cottage cheese. A Britisher may gag, but I'm telling you this is delicious.

  5. Parmesan cheese has a strong flavor, takes away from the flavor of the Heinz beans too much. Shredded mozzarella might be a better, more subtle flavor. I like the beans on a good honey wheat bread. This dish pairs well with a cup of hot black tea. The flavors compliment each other well. However, the tea may interfere with iron absorption.

From my name you can tell I am C-R-A-Z-Y for British telly and films. I'm not British, I just wish I was :-( My 4 passions are: British Film & Telly, Traveling, Cooking/new recipes and DRINKING!!!! (I quit smoking recently otherwise that would have been my 5th passion) I tend to go through extreme food and product "Phases" for example: for 2 months I'll be in an "India" phase where I ONLY eat food and use products from India . The month after that might be my "Dutch" phases, where EVERYTHING has to come from the Netherlands, etc.... Sometimes I even DRESS the part - Like when I was in my "German Phase" I actually bought a few dirndls (and WORE them - in public!!! In all honesty, they are cery cute dirndles, not the hard-core grandma style) - the German phase what my longest - it lasted and entire year and made me broke buying all my groceries and milk from Germany (from www.lila.de --just in case you're interested) The shipping cost MORE than the actual food sometimes. But I HAD to have my SonnenBasserman Schlemmergulasch! LOL! Another time, I would only by my groceries at any of the 4 Polish grocery stores in my city, that was my least favorite phase because Polish food isn't that tasty, and it SMELLS! . I think that was my shortest phase, lasted 2 weeks, but I still by this yummy apple & mint juice drink there and Paprika flavored chips/crisps. I feel so embarressed admitting that here - and hope I'm not the only one who does that. Gawd, I hope my mother does read this and see what I'm spending all my money on! So, no matter what "phase" I might be in Friday night is ALWAYS "British Night" - no matter what!
