"A recipe from an older edition of the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. (The recipe in the newest edition is not as good IMHO.) Warm, chocolate, yum!"

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, 2 T. cocoa, baking powder, and salt). Add the milk, oil, and vanilla and mix until smooth. Stir in the walnuts, if desired. Transfer the batter to a 9x9 baking pan (or roughly equivalent sized pan).
  • Combine the brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa. Stir in the boiling water. Pour evenly over the batter. Bake about 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near the center of the cake comes out clean. Serve warm.
