Buttermilk Bread

"This is the softest bread I have made yet and it's very flavourful. Great for toast or slathered with peanut butter, yummy!! I let the machine do the work and then bake in the oven."

  1. I omitted the powdered milk as I didn't have any, and kneaded the dough for about 10 minutes in my stand mixer. I had to add about 5 minutes of bake time, probably because of my oven. This bread is soft, light, and easy to slice. It got rave reviews from my family. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

  2. Made as directed and should have checked the dough before letting the bread maker carry on. It needed additional flour, as is the dough was more like that for batter bread. Had great flavor and I will make again with additional flour. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  3. We enjoyed this bread. I made it on the dough setting and baked in my oven and it came out great except that the dough is very sticky. Next time, I'll watch it and add more flour to make it less sticky. Thanks for posting!

  4. this bread is so soft, airy and delicious...thanks for the recipe!

  5. This bread is delicious and smells wonderful while baking. The texture and taste reminds me of the little loaves of bread they used to sell at Astroworld when I was a kid. I loved that bread! I've made this twice now. The first time I followed the directions and baked it in the oven, but my oven is very old and about to die and it didn't get done in the center although the top was very brown. This was NOT the fault of the recipe, just my old, dying oven. I then made it again and baked it in my bread machine on the white bread cycle. It turned out wonderful! Thank you bailey46 for a great recipe!

Tweaks

  1. Hubby was crazy about this bread. I substituted 1 c. of the flour with wheat flour, and left it in the bread machine to bake. Was great!

  2. WOW!!! Another award winning 10* recipe! This is absolutely delicious! My DH has just about ate the whole loaf by hisself. I did make two changes and those were.. I used 1/4 slim milk in place of the dry milk and I used bread flour in place of all purpose (which I hear is about the same) I also warmed both the buttermilk and milk in the microwave so it would activate the yeast better when working the dough in the machine. This is another regular bread in our house as your soft As Wonder" White Bread Recipe #154576 is too. I was told never to buy a loaf of bread in the store ever again!!! LOL Thank you so much Bailey for your wonderful recipes.
