Candy Cane Cookies

"I don't know where this one came from but my high school cooking class. This was one of the cookies we made for the Christmas Dinner they had on the last day of school."

  • Cream together butter and sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in egg, vanilla and peppermint extract.
  • Stir together flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Alternately with milk add dry ingredients to creamed butter mixture. 3 dry, 2 milk. Until smooth and pliable.
  • Divide in 1/2; blend food coloring into 1/2.
  • Cover and chill for 4 hours or firm.
  • Cut each into 48 pieces.
  • With hands, gently roll one piece of each color into 4 inch rope. Place side by side and twist together.
  • Put on cookie sheet, form a cane.
  • Bake at 375 F for 12-15 minutes.
  • Hints: Gently squish the ropes together and onto the cookie sheet, that way they stay together and don't unravel. Since I make 8 dozen each year, I make 2 batches of dough and add the food coloring to the milk of one dough, that way I don't have to over work the dough trying to get the color evenly mixed inches.

  1. The dough was a disaster. I followed the recipe exactly and when I got it out of the fridge after 4 hours it was so hard I could barely get it out of the bowl. When I did finally get it out, it was so sticky that after making 8 cookies even my 3 year old didn't want to touch it anymore. I had to scrape the remaining dough off the table with a knife since that was tho only wat to get it off. We baked the ones we made and they were okay but they sort of taste like flour and water with mint extact.
     
  2. These cookies taste great and are addictive, but the dough is hopelessly soft and sticky. So, there's no way I'm going to be making them as anything but normal round cookies. So, 5 stars for taste, 1 star for actually being able to make anything decorative with the dough.
     
  3. What a great addition to my cookie tray! It was simple to make. I just rolled out a few ropes at a time and then twisted the red and white ones together. No problems with the dough, but I got distracted halfway through and needed to re-refridgerate because it can become too soft. But the results were cute candy canes and helped make a very pretty assortment of cookies this year.
     
  4. Delicious cookies!! The dough was great to work with - my kids had so much fun helping. I agree about the whole teaspoon of peppermint (or even more) for a nice minty flavor. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

October 2008 I finally got the job I wanted. I been cooking for the kids for just over a year now and I love every day of it. The kids are great, some frustration, but it is all good, they are so smiley everyday, how could you not like work when you have a bunch of smiling faces looking at you. <br> <br>Another good thing about my job is I get the summers off. I had a pretty good summer, I got to tend to my garden and get a bunch of stuff into the freezers, I was given a second freezer this summer. I have been planning on eating mainly out of the freezers so we can save some extra cash for Christmas. <br> <br>I have plans on finding some nutrition courses that I can do online, just for dabbling in, it would sure help with cooking for the kids. <br> <br>I live with my hubby and 3 kids (11,6,5), and one cat, who is part in-door, out-door. <br> <br>I really want to get back into losing weight this school year, it has been 1 1/2 years since I lost about 15 pounds, I have maintained that loss though. I would still like to lose another 10 pounds.
