Caramel Frosting

"This is a great flavored frosting for apple cake. I haven't tried it on anything else, but I"m thinking even on carrot cake for a change from the standard cream cheese frosting. It makes quite a substantial amount and so you may want to adjust accordingly. So, serving amount is ???"

  1. This frosting is delicious. I used 2 cups of powdered sugar and added a teaspoon of vanilla to it, and it went perfectly with dicentra's Blackberry Jam Cake #451273. I was able to frost the whole cake, put a thin layer between the two cake layers, and have a little bit left over so it made the perfect amount of frosting. Thanks for posting!

  2. Makes for one GREAT tasting Caramel Frosting. Powdered a portion of recipe#145484 - using your caramel frosting for the rest - both got the high five! This really compliments an apple cake - am sure it would carrot cakes as well. Used just a little less than two cups of the icing sugar. Think it could well depend on just how much simmer we do when it comes to how much of the powdered sugar one needs for spreading consistency. Thank you for sharing - made for the Auz/NZ Swap and added to my Family Favorites cookbook.

  3. This is a deliciously rich frosting that goes well with carrot cake indeed! I made as followed except I only needed 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar. Any more and I would have needed to add milk to get it to a spreading consistency. I have also used this type of frosting on a walnut cake recipe I make. Thanks for sharing!

  4. There are many caveats & suggestions to help avoid graininess when making caramel frostings, none of which are mentioned in this recipe, but should be. Will not be using this caramel frosting again.

  5. Oh, I also added a teaspoon of vanilla extract too. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS frosting.
