  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and sugar.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Add shortening, egg, vanilla, and milk; blend well.
  5. Add oats; mix well.
  6. Add cherries; mix well.
  7. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls on ungreased baking sheet.
  8. Bake 12 to 14 minutes.
  9. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container.
