Chicken Agrodolce (an Italian Sweet and Sour Chicken)

"This is such a unique Italian chicken dish. Chicken breasts are briefly sauteed, then simmered in a sauce of honey, balsamic vinegar, wine, orange and lemon juice. Toss in a few toasted pignoli, and you've got a quick and delicious dinner with risotto or cappellini."

Reviews

  1. I had to write a review about this recipe. I have been really disappointed in the 5 star recipes I've been making recently, but this one broke the mold. It is EXCELLENT! Tangy, sweet, with the right amount of heat. We followed the recipe exactly, except we had 5 boneless skinless chicken breasts, so we doubled the rest of the ingredients (except the lemon and orange juice were just increased 1.5 times). We will be making this again! I already emailed it to my mom and sister.

  2. So simple and delicious! A keeper - thank you! My family loves it, I've never dared to use balsamic vinegar like that but it was worth it.

  3. This is on my 'go to' list now. Easier than it looks. I added the cayenne to the flour, used some lemon and orange zest and served it with roasted brussel sprouts. Wonderful.

  4. This is a very tasty and easy to prepare chicken dish. I served it with a mushroom risotto and steamed broccoli and it was a fantastic meal. I think I'd up the sour flavor next time a bit because it was a little sweet...but that's a matter of taste. Definitely a repeater!

  5. I have made this several times and each time I'm astonished at how people react to it...wonderful and elegant presentation, though I have also made it in smaller bite sized pieces for buffet fare... Thanks for the post EdsGirl!

Tweaks

  1. Used this recipe as inspiration. Replaced flour with potato flakes due to an allergy of grains. Left out the bay leaves and allspice as well because we did not have any. Also no white wine. The flavor was great anyway! We did add a big of dried minced onion and used powdered garlic to taste. No pine nuts for us. A great sweet and sour, our new favorite! It's defintely better than the chinese sweet and sour types. The balsamic and honey are the key!

  2. My husband and I loved this! We added broccoli, sliced baby carrots, and bell peppers. The sauce soaked into the veggies and made them delectable! I doubled up the sauce so I had enough to cover the chicken and the veggies. I also used apple juice instead of the dry white wine. Yum!

  3. Oh, my! What a wonderful combination of flavors. Prepared this for the first time today - easy directions to follow and it tastes wonderful. I did not have any garlic so I used 1/2 tsp of onion powder instead. I will definitely serve this again. Thank you for sharing this recipe. We loved it. Can you tell?

  4. My husband loves sweet and sour, so I tried this recipe. He loved it. I put fresh ground allspice, as I coulndn't get the berries. I also used honey with white truffles instead of plain honey. Will definetly make again.

  5. So, perhaps with all of my substitutions, this doesn't really count as the same recipe, but it was still pretty good! :) I didn't have bay leaves, allspice (in any form), or pignolis so they all got completely cut. And I substituted apple juice for the white wine and orange marmalade for the orange juice. I would recommend cutting back on the honey a little bit if you substitute those, because they're sweeter than their counterparts. My husband didn't like the marmalade substitution because he said it tasted bitter; but I thought it was fine. Thanks!
