- 1 onion, chopped
- 4 tablespoons shortening
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons salt, divided
- 1 (4 -5 lb) whole chickens, disjointed
- 1 1⁄2 cups water
- 1 cup sour cream
- 3 eggs, beaten
- 1⁄2 cup water
- 3 cups flour
directions
- Make dumplings: Mix with a spoon: 3 eggs, beaten; 1/2 cup water; 3 cups flour and 1 T. salt. Drop batter by teaspoons into boiling salted water. Cook 10 minutes; drain. Rinse with cold water.
- Chicken: Brown onion in shortening. Add seasonings and chicken; brown 10 minutes. Add water; cover and let simmer slowly until tender. Remove chicken; add sour cream to to drippings in pan and mix well. Add dumplings.
- Arrange chicken on top. Heat through and serve. For more gravy, add 1/2 pint sweet cream to sour cream. Cooking time for chicken is a guess.
