Reviews

  1. Tastes just like a chili cheese dog! Easier to eat, too! I'd add more onions next time and cheese. Quick and easy!

  2. I love hot dogs and canned chili so this casserole was right up my alley. LOVED IT!!! Simple, easy and satisfied my craving. My husband, who is a little impressed with himself, rolled his eyes but once he dug in and started eating, he was won over. Thanks for the recipe, Yooper.

  3. Taste just like a chili dog! Would recommend cooking hot dogs first. I used my grill pan on the stove then sliced them up after grilling, made a HUGE difference. Will also add more onions next time.

  4. I've made this caserole many, many times and have never been disappointed. I mostly make it during the winter when cooking out hot dogs is not an option. I also grew up in Flint, Michigan home of the original Angelo's coney island hotdog......this casserole taste just like the one's I used to get as a teenager growing up in Flint.....try it. You won't be disappointed.......

  5. Have made this several times and perfect every time. Prefer to have my hotdogs this way now!! I serve with slaw on top. Yum yum!

Tweaks

  1. Nice idea to turn chili dogs into a casserole. I always use turkey chili, add cut up hotdogs and microwave then spoon on buns and top with coleslaw. Don’t know why you couldn’t put the bun layer on the bottom and microwave instead of baking. I’m going to try it.

  2. I made my own chili with 1 lb. of ground turkey, sliced the hot dogs (6 longer hot dogs) lengthwise laying them over broken up whole when hot dog rolls, and used very thin half slices of onion over top of the chili layer. And baked covered at 400 deg for about 20 mins, and uncovered for 5 min.

  3. I would make this a "Junkyard Dog" casserole by adding peppers, putting mayo on hotdog buns to keep them soft, and topping with creamy coleslaw and chopped tomatoes when it comes out of the oven.

  4. When I made this the hot dog buns came out hard so I have replaced the buns with corn bread it comes out way better

  5. We really liked this. It turned out great simply by following the recipe, however, I used more hot dogs than 8. The second time I made this with baked beans instead of chili, I made the beans thick with brown sugar and hamburger. The kids loved it. Hubby wants me to make it again with greek sauce instead of chili.
