  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Whisk together the flour and next 6 ingredients.
  • Cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles small peas and is crumbly.
  • Stir in the chocolate chunks and nuts.
  • Combine the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla; pour over crumb mixture; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened.
  • Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface, and gently knead 3-4 times.
  • Divide dough in half; shape each half into a ball.
  • Pat each into a 6 inch circle on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  • Cut each circle into 6 wedges using a sharp knife (do not separate wedges).
  • Sprinkle 2 tablespoons sugar over dough.
  • Bake for 36 minutes or until a pick comes out clean; separate wedges.
  • Serve warm, or remove to a wire rack to cool.
