directions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Line a baking pan with aluminum foil.
  • Lay the saltine crackers in the pan (single layer), you may not use the whole pkg depending on the size of the pan.
  • Sometimes I have 3-6 crackers left over.
  • In a saucepan melt the butter and sugar together.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • When comes to a boil, pour over the crackers.
  • Put cracker pan in oven and bake for 10 minutes (DO NOT OVER BAKE-- EXACTLY 10 MIN).
  • It will caramelize a little.
  • Remove from oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top.
  • When the chips begin to melt spread to the edges of the pan.
  • Cool completely.
  • When completely cool break randomly into small pieces (about 1 inch works well).
  • This recipe is so easy and quick!
  • At our house it rarely lasts more than a day--our kids and their friends beg us to make it when they come over too!
  • Enjoy!

  1. Wow, this was delicious...but 10 min. was too long in my oven..I would start watching it at 7 min..will definitely make it again..thanks for sharing this recipe...C

  2. This did not work out for me. 10 minutes at 400 degrees exactly and the topping was overdone. DH did not like it as is, so I might try it with brown sugar next time. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Wow! This was really good, but, I was a little perplexed about this recipe. It calls for 1 package...16 oz of saltine crackers. I went out and purchased a 16 oz box, since all I had at home were 2 sleeves out of a previous box, thinking I did not have enough. I ended up only using 1 sleeve of crackers, minus about 6 single crackers. I started out using 1/2 cup of butter with the 1 cup of sugar, but was very dry and thick, almost solid, so I ended up having to use a whole cup. The size pan I used was a standard 15" by 10" cookie sheet. The end results were a very tasty treat that I plan on sharing with my family in Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, after freezing. If I had to change anything, I would relist this as calling for 1 sleeve of crackers out of a 16 oz box...not the entire package, and 1 cup of butter. Thanks so much for posting this...I'm glad it turned out! I heard you can take Ritz crackers and dip them in mint chocolate and tastes just like Girl Scout thin mints! Will have to try!

  4. Oh, these are wonderful little treats and so addictive. I watched an espisode where Paula Dean made these and she called it Pine Bark. I used about 1-1/2 packages of crackers, 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of brown sugar. To die for!!

  5. This is great! The night I made this, I thought my teeth would fall out from all of the sugar! ;) I've also found that it's highly addictive-- watch out!
