Chocolate Milkshakes With No Ice Cream!

"Ok, I know it's an oxymoron to say 'frozen' and then 'hot' but this tastes like hot chocolate, except it's icey like a milkshake. I make this, and variables of this shake constantly for my family. This is a delicious, lower fat way to cool off on a hot day, or really wake your mouth up in the morning! Also a wonderful alternative to soda, Kool-aid, etc for the kids!"

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 full size ice cubes (from ice cube tray, if using small ice cubes, double)

directions

  • Place all ingredients in blender and blend on high until there are no chunks of ice left. ** but make sure you're using ONE OR THE OTHER of either cocoa powder OR chocolate milk mix, NOT BOTH.
  • (My blender makes a grumbling sound and then the sound changes when there are no more ice chunks.)** You can change this recipe so many ways to create your own-- add an 1/8 tsp of peppermint extract for a chocolate mint milkshake.
  • Add some coffee or 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder to make a "Mocha" flavor.
  • Omit the chocolate and powdered coffee creamer altogether to make vanilla.
  • With a vanilla base, add any kind of berries-- or replace the milk with 1-1/2 cups orange juice & 1/2 cup water to make the best orange julius just like you get in the mall!
  • (I don't advise using milk and orange juice together as the acid in the juice will curdle the milk in your stomach!) Play with the amount of sugar, cocoa, etc to create the best taste for you and your family.

  1. What a LOVELY drink this makes! I used Hintz Dutch Processed Cocoa powder today to make this. Next time, I'll try using Ovaltine as I am an Ovaltine lover:) I increased this recipe by three times and made it to give away as gifts today to my cook(Its his b'day and today is NO WAR day in my kitchen, lol) and his friends'. They love it. Oh and I had a glass too(I skipped lunch today, just so I could relish every drop of this);) Wonderful taste - It's got the right amount of creaminess and beautiful texture and colour to boot! Serve this cold and you can make even a nasty cop smile for joy! Infact, it wouldn't be wrong if I said it tastes like it came from the hands of a professional! Thanks for sharing!

  2. DELICIOUS! I added some whipping cream instead of powdered coffee creamer because I didn't have any, but it still tasted perfect! Thank you! Makes my hot summer day a lot better!

  3. Aaaamazing! I made this in my vitamix, so it took seconds to make and was sooo smooth! I have been trying ice cream free milk shake recipes in my vitamix lately and this is THE BEST I've had! The creamer must be the real key to getting it smooth like that. I did add about 1/8 tsp of xanthan gum because I find that it helps to keep the ice from separating, but I'm not sure if that made any difference in this recipe or not (couldn't hurt). Oh, also I used a mixture of truvia and stevia. 2 tablespoons of truvia one dropper full of liquid NuNaturals stevia. PERFECT. My husband, 5 yrs old son and 2 yr old daughter loved it. I used whole raw milk, and I divided these into 4 8oz servings and without using real sugar each serving came out to about 100 calories. Awesome! I'll be having this a lot! <br/>I'll for sure tey the orange Julius version of this!! I bet it's amazing. Thanks for this!! :)

  4. Used unsweetened almond milk, truvia, & 1/2 & 1/2. This is 1 ww point AND tastes delicious! 5 minutes to make. Thanks for the 'base'

  5. Super good! The first couple times I made it without the creamer, because I didn't have any, but I finally got some and used it, and it makes a big difference in the texture. I also use only 1/4 cup of sugar, and it's plenty.
