Chocolate Oatmuck (Oatmeal)

"My kids think this is more like a treat than breakfast. I usually make up a batch in the evening, so I don't have to wait in the morning for it to be ready. It's tasty either hot or cold. I will often sneak a bite from the fridge when I'm looking for a treat."

directions

  • Melt butter in a large skillet and saute steel cut oats over medium high heat for about one minute.
  • Add hot water, bring to a boil and reduce heat to keep at a simmer for 20 minutes. Do not stir!
  • Mix salt, sugar and cocoa powder together to prevent the cocoa from clumping and add to oats. Add milk and continue to simmer for another 10 minutes stirring occasionally.
  • Enjoy.

  1. Wow... "treat" is right! This stuff is seriously good... almost like a healthy chocolate pudding! I thought it might be a little too liquid (even after simmering uncovered) but it thickened up nicely upon cooling. This is going to be my new favorite dessert!

  2. Made this as a lunch treat because I was feeling lazy and didn't want to make anything. Doubled the recipe and subbed 1 C water and 4 oz vegan cream cheese for the milk. Kids loved it. Thanks!
