Questions & Replies

  1. I want to make this from fresh tomatoes. Any thoughts on that and I prefer the picante style so what do you suggest for that?

  1. Decent replica, but better if you add some onion powder as the original Mott's version does. Biker_Chef's Hot TIp - Do not use bottled clam juice, that makes it as expensive as the real thing. Use Minor's Clam Base concentrate instead. Buy this from Amazon for you are unlikely to find it outside of a restaurant supply store. For a little extra zip, add the juice pressed from a couple of cloves of fresh garlic. VARIATION - For a Mexican twist, add the juice of one fresh lime and 1/2 to 1 Tsp. finely powdered Coriander. Then garnish the serving glass with a slice of lime and a few chopped Cilantro leaves.

  2. I ordered the Minors clam base concentrate as suggested by biker_chef. It came today and I made the recipe, added onion powder and it is very good. I'm sure it will be even better after it is chilled. I used one tablespoon of the clam base, in case anyone else decides to order the Minors clam base (from Amazon). This is much cheaper than buying Clamato juice and it has no high fructose corn syrup or msg. Make sure the tomato juice you buy doesn't have either of those ingredients, if you are health conscious.

  3. Haven't tried it yet but for me it doesn't matter if it costs as much as Mots. After drinking it (Motts Clamato) for 20 plus years I finally looked at the ingredients and I wasn't very happy. Worst ingredient...mono-sodium glutamate. No wonder I'm so addicted. Looking forward to trying this recipe plus all of your (reviewer's) suggestions.

  4. Close, but not exact. I added crazy salt, onion powder and more clam broth (Better than Bouillon clam base)Will definitely make again.

  5. Just for information's sake, Minor's Clam base and Better Than Bullion Clam base both contain MSG. Minor's states iMSG right on the label in addition to an alias often used to disguise MSG by calling it hydrolyzed soy and/or corn protein. Use clam juice, yes it's mirr expensive but it is much healthier than the excititoxins in MSG and hydrolyzed proteins. Other than that, great techie and so much better than Clamato. Thank you. https://www.livestrong.com/article/467219-what-is-hydrolized-soy-protein/

Tweaks

  1. I used 1/2 & 1/2 tomato juice/bottled clam juice for seasoning I used salt, garlic & onion powder, Crystal hot sauce & lemon juice. I disolved 2 tbsp Zero (erythritol) in hot water. Tasted it side by side with Motts Clamato and it was pretty close. Frankly the Motts is a little too sweet for my taste. I'm happier with a more savory flavor.
