Cream Sauce for Swedish Meatballs

"In England, swedish meatballs are very available and cheap. They are very good with the following cream sauce and boiled potatoes. My son, who has to be one of the faddiest people on the planet, found this delicious. This is from the cookbook 'Ikea's Real Swedish Food Book'."

  1. Wonderful sauce!!! I used homemade stock and added a little beef base checking carefully that it didn't get too salty (thank you other reviewers). I also sauteed a minced shallot before adding the broth. This is going to be a 'go to' sauce for other dishes as well as the meatballs. As a public service announcement to my American friends I want to mention that the measurements are in Imperial as the chef is English. What this means to you is that a pint in England is 20 oz versus the 16 oz you may be accustomed too.

  2. Wow!! this was great. I actually tripled the recipe for more sauce and added 1 shallot to sauce. I also added some dill and garlic powder.Everyone was raving about the sauce!!Thanks for a great recipe!!

  3. Great simple sauce !! THANKS FOR POSTING!! I also add a dash of onion and garlic powder and a TBS of dried porcini mushroom powder ( brings out that umami flavor). I mix WONDRA flour into a tbs of sherry instead of water. I noticed that there were some posts about the measurements ( being uk verses us). Just remember to those of us who are American uk cooking measurements strike us dumbfounded!! Remember is this saying " a pints a pound world round " i.e. 16 oz ! That goes for volume or weight. Here is the recipe that was posted above serving 4 simplified ( non metric ) ¼ c cream ½ c beef stock/broth ½ Tbs soy sauce 1 tbs white flour 1 Tbs water Salt and white pepper to taste

  4. This was very good. I doubled the recipe and omitted the soy sauce on mistake, but it was still delicious. My husband didn't believe me that a gravy-type could be made without meat drippings. Now he knows. Thanks!

  5. My family enjoyed this very much. I loosely tripled the recipe using US ounces, which came out to a little less than 1 cup of cream which I assumed was half and half. I used a 14.5 oz. can of reduced sodium beef broth, about two tablespoons of soy sauce, and approximately 5 tablespoons each of flour and water. I thickened the gravy to the consistency we like. The additional soy sauce gave a little more depth of flavor and since the beef broth had 50% less sodium than regular we didn't find the gravy to be to salty. I used homemade meatballs that I keep in the freezer, and served it over mashed red potatoes. Even my husband enjoyed it and he said he's never really cared for Ikea's Swedish Meatballs. Thank you for a quick, satisfying and easy recipe.

Tweaks

  1. This was amazing! I switched the cream for 1% milk and doubled the recipe and it turned out perfect for the frozen meatballs. Very simple and tasty!

  2. I doubled this and served it with frozen vegetarian "meat"balls. I also used vegetable stock instead of beef stock. I had a little trouble getting the sauce to thicken at all, so I added a bit of cornstarch, and it turned out fine. Simple, fast and delicious! Thanks!

I live in Hertford in England with my husband, son and dog. I love cooking, and love reading recipie books planning meals for my friends. However, I spend so long reading the books, I tend to be put off trying the recipies myself. I find recipezaar a brilliant resource, and try a new recipie every weekend. My first being spinach and ricotta canelloni which is absolutely delicious.
