  1. This is the first time I've ever made my own baked beans and they were amazing! The house smelt amazing too! Couldn't wait to dig in. Gorgeous, rich flavour. Very more-ish, I just wanted to eat them all!

  2. I actually used a homemade sauce which I had made for some pork chops earlier in the week which had chopped peaches in it. These beans were easy and delicious! Everyone at the cookout could not get over how great these are! A sure hit for any occasion!

  3. I LOVED these baked beans!! I did make a couple changes...I used real bacon bits, cut out the green pepper (we don't like it), and cut down the brown sugar to 1/4 cup based on other reviews. I cooked these on low but after about 6 hours one side started to burn (I think it's a problem with my crockpot) so I turned it down to keep warm for another 2 hours until the rest of dinner was ready. I will never eat straight-out-of-the-can baked beans again!

  4. These are not boston baked beans. Boston baked beans never contain green pepper, catsup or barbeque sauce, and are not made from already prepared baked beans. This is a tasty recipe I'm sure, but it is just named wrong

  5. This recipe was very good but too sweet for me. My husband loved it and he had finish it. I'm diabetic and not having eaten anything with added sugar for several years I figured it was just me over reacting to the sweet taste. But looking at the other reviews I realize it really was too sweet. I'll make it again but I'll be sure to cut way back on the sugar. I wish I had read all the reviews before I made it the first time.

Tweaks

  1. We were pleasantly surprised at how well this turned out; even I, who don't normally care for baked beans, went back for seconds! Since I made this on the spur of the moment tonight, some minor modifications were in order! I found at the last moment that I had no brown sugar, so I substituted 1/3 cup honey and 1 tbsp white sugar. I used frozen diced peppers and onion, raw bacon, and added lots of freshly ground black and red pepper, as well as a dash of salt, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, and 1/2 tsp Mrs Dash. I also cooked this on the stove rather than the crockpot, simmering it for nearly an hour. Finally, I used drained Pork & Beans instead of Baked Beans. In spite of my 'artistic license' with the recipe, we all loved it, even my DH who has always sworn that baked beans made any way other than his mother's way (beans, maple syrup, brown sugar, and mustard - NOTHING else in it) is absolutely horrible ;) Dawn, thank you for an great recipe that I'll make again!

  2. These were some of the best baked beans I've ever made. I used Bush's vegetarian style beans and instead of frying the bacon, just added it in raw, cut into bite-size pieces, which worked very well. Used red pepper instead of green, hickory bbq sauce and a little extra mustard. After reading a previous comment about them being sweet I decided to cut the sugar down by 2 Tbsp and I'm glad I did because the sweetness was just perfect for my taste. Thanks for the recipe Dawn!

I?m ?originally from Texas, but now live in Florida. Still gotta have that spice though....love chipotle peppers, habaneros, and jalapenos. This is a picture of myself & my 2 daughters taken in Dec'06. I am working on my graduate degree, & still work as a nurse prn. When I'm not cooking and eating what I cook... I head for the gym to work out. As far as cookbooks, I love the church/ community cookbooks, where someone has dug out old handwritten recipes by granny and shared them with others-those are the best kind. If I had a month off, I'd for sure go hiking, would love to visit Australia and New Zealand.?
