  1. Oh, so perfect for a winter’s dinner. The only adjustments I made were to use two bay leaves, a fresh sprig if rosemary and more ham to give it a meatier taste to the tooth. So very delicious and satisfying. We served with fresh baked sourdough biscuits.??

  2. I used chicken broth instead of water and made it the night before and refrigerated it to soak. Since I only had a ham steak, I added a packet of Goya Ham Concentrate for added flavor. Checked on it after 5 hours in the crockpot and ended up eating 3 bowls. Delicious!

  3. Instead of water, I used chicken broth. Also, even though nothing was said about soaking the lentils, one person did comment on that. I solved that by adding all the ingredients into the crock pot; then I refrigerated it overnight and put it on, low, at 7 am so I would have something ready for dinner (10 hrs on slow). The lentils soaked in the broth, and the result was a tasty lentil soup. Bsides the pieces of ham, I of course used a ham bone.

  4. What a delicious soup! To avoid undercooked lentils, I try to make time to soak them in water for up to 24 hours. I doubled the onion and used celery salt as I was out of fresh celery. Before I serve it, I put about half the soup in the blender for a nice creamy texture. Yumm!!

  5. I made this the other day and found it to be very good! y only problem was that the lentils didn't soften to my liking after 10 hours of cooking. A friend suggested that the lentils may have been old. I will definitely make it again. Thank you for sharing!

Tweaks

  1. Very good, but DEFINITELY soak your lentils, as others have said. Not easy to get them as soft as I like them. Had I not soaked overnight, 9 hours would not have been enough time to cook and I'd still be waiting for dinner.

  2. Very easy to make and I switched out 1/2 of the lentils with yellow split peas. I wanted red lentils, but couldn't find them locally. I found the soup very salty, and it could have been me. I added a meaty smoked ham hock to the crock pot for additional flavor and probably should have added no salt whatsoever. I threw a few cut up potatoes near the end of cooking time to try and soak up some of the salt, but ended up throwing the batch out. I'm making another batch tomorrow . . .

  3. This is very good soup. It is also extremely filling. I omitted the thyme and red pepper flakes and used chicken broth in place of the water. We really liked it and is was very easy to make too. Thanks for the recipe.
