Crumble mix

"Easy, quick, versatile and tasty! I found this recipe in an old cook book I picked up in a charity shop years ago. This is now my 'default' desert recipe. Use it over your favourite fruits. A couple of tips: Quantities: Flour:Butter:Sugar=2:1:1 (e.g. 6oz flour to 3oz butter and 3oz sugar). Stick to the order in which ingredients are added as described below (flour, then butter, then sugar). Vanilla sugar gives the recipe extra flavour as does a drop of vanilla extract before adding the sugar. The mix is quite sweet on its own so when preparing the filling don't over-sweeten. Enjoy!"

directions

  • Measure flour into a microwave-proof bowl.
  • Add the butter to the flour (just plonk it in in one big lump if you want!) Pop bowl with butter and flour in the microwave for between 10 and 20 seconds to soften butter.
  • Use a fork to blend flour and butter until the mix texture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • Add sugar and mix together with a fork.
  • Sprinkle over crumble filling of your choice in an oven-proof pie dish (Apple and rasin, rhubarb and ground ginger, peaches and raspberries are some of my favourtie fillings. Fresh fruits will need to be par-cooked- pop in microwave covered and with a spoon or two of water after peeling/chopping for a few minutes- before spri) Bake in oven at 180 degrees Celcius for about 30 minutes.
  • Serve hot or cold with fresh cream or ice cream.
  • YUM!

  1. Tried this over some fresh Peaches, just peeled and sliced the peaches 4 medium sized, sprinkled with some splenda 1.5 pkts and put 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup sugar a sprinkle of nutmeg and a sprinkle of cinnamon over the peaches and baked for 25 mins. at 375% it was great. served it with a scoop of vanilla Ice cream super delicous. The best crumb toppings I've ever tried

  2. i made apple and blackberry crumble and this topping was excellent. My mum would't leave without me writing down the crumble recipe. It would be great on top of anything. Tahnks

  3. Delicious! This is the type of crumble mixture I like the best; crumbly, as opposed to crispy. Instead of softening the butter, I dropped pieces of it into the flour, and let my Kitchenaid stand mixer cut it into the flour until it resembled breadcrumbs. I made peach crumble with this, using Libby's Premium Sliced Peaches. (24.5 oz, in a plastic jar). I drained peaches, and mixed them with 1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of ginger. (I didn't add any sugar to the peaches). I topped the dessert with whipped cream sprinkled with sugar & cinnamon. We all enjoyed this immensely! Yummy stuff!

  4. Superb! Easiest and tastiest recipe for crumble I've seen. I also use it for savoury dishes by simply replacing the sugar with a pinch of salt and some seasoning, depending on the dish. YUM, YUM, YUM.

Hello! I'm a semi-beginner cook learning loads from Recipezaar. Great site! My cooking successes are enjoyed by my husband and sometimes my colleagues (I'm a mechanical engineer working in wind energy development). The flops (thankfully few) are enjoyed by my slightly bonkers dog, Spud, who eats anything. Just don't mention the sushi ... Aside from cooking I also enjoy gardening. I have only a very small town garden but I love to be able to grow things I can use in my cooking. I have two bay trees, a little herb patch with three types of thyme, chives, sage, rosemary and parsely. This year I'm trying to grow sweetcorn though I don't know how it will like our cool, damp summer weather here in Dublin. I'm also growing tomatoes and 'Scarlet Emperor' Runner beans. And when I'm too lazy to cook and its too wet and cold to garden I love reading - pretty much anything from my gardening and cook books to page-turning bestsellers. I'm currently reading Michael Moore's 'Stupid White Men' and Nelson Mandela's autobiography, 'Long Walk to Freedom' (quite a contrast!). I'm always on the look-out for suggestions for new reads. And if I'm too lazy even to read I enjoy a good film (movies) or listening to the radio (big fan of BBC Radio 4 - its always on in my kitchen). I love to travel (I've been to the US (Boston - the obligatory three-month stint working there when I was a student in 1995, New York (just a week in Manhattan) and California (twice - I love that place!), Australia (five months backpacking - amazing place!), Malaysia (loved the fresh fruit slices from street stalls that I had for breakfast each day, not to mention curry dumplings ... mmm!), Singapore, Thailand (the backpacker trail!) Spent a couple of weeks learning Thai cookery and Thai massage (not similtaneously!) in Chang Mai in north Thailand ... beautiful food, beautiful people (ditto Malaysia). Done a fair bit of travelling in Europe too: London, Edinburgh, Paris, Barcelona, Andalucia, Copenhagen, Kosice, Florence and my favourite of all, Rome. And one of my favourite parts of any adventure is trying out new foods. Looking forward to trying many of the recipes and tips here on Recipezaar...
