4 stars come from DH- and he is usually stingy with his stars. Left up to me, I would likely rate this 3 stars, but I think it's just a personal taste preference thing with me. I look forward to trying this perhaps without the apples. I normally don't mind fruit in savory dishes, but this dish I felt didn't really need the apples. I also opted for closer to one cup of wine, and I think I could've done less, or perhaps used a milder wine than the merlot I had. Overall though, a hearty and different dish, that DH really couldn't get enough of.

My DH and I loved this recipe. DH was very skeptical when he saw me adding the apples, but both of us were pleasantly suprised to discover what a nice compliment they were to the other indgredients in the recipe. This was very easy to prepare and was bursting with flavor. It was definitely nice on a cool evening. Also, as Kittencal suggested, we, too thought it was even better the second day! Thanks for this keeper!

The flavors from this are still zinging in my mouth. Very simple to prepare and just delicious. Scaled this down to 1.5 servings which is enough for dinner and lunch. My batch included the ginger, the minimum stated amount of wine and less oil than stated. The contrast between the spicy beef and the sweet Granny Smith made this special and quite different from my usual Keema recipe. Thanks for a fabulous dinner.
