Date Chocolate Chip Cake

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Place dates and baking soda in bowl. Pour boiling water over them, mix and cool down, then add vanilla. Set aside.
  • Blend flour, cocoa and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream shortening, sugar and eggs.
  • Alternately add the date mixture and the flour mixture to the shortening, sugar and egg mixture.
  • Pour into a greased 9X13 pan.
  • Sprinkle top with chocolate chips and walnuts.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes. Cool to room temperature.
  • Enjoy!

  1. I love this cake. I got the recipe from Linda, my college roomate in San Diego about 1973 and have been baking it often since then. She was from Minnesota...maybe related to this chef? The only difference was that 1/2 the nuts and 1/2 the chocolate chips were stirred into the batter; the rest were sprinkled over the top before baking. When I didn't have enough chocolate chips, I've added 3 oz unsweetened chocolate and 3 T cocoa powder to the cake batter to make a chocolate date cake. Thanks for bringing back some good memories!
     
  2. If you love dates you may like this but my family really didn't care for this although they liked the topping.
     
  3. Thanks for posting this wonderful recipe. I have been making this for years. The recipe originally came off of a can of baking cocoa in the 1930's.
